MetaMask, a leading self-custodial wallet, plans to integrate support for Bitcoin (BTC). Known for its dominance in the Ethereum ecosystem, this move could enhance MetaMask’s appeal to a broader crypto audience.

The integration aligns with the broader trend of interoperability in the blockchain space, promising a more versatile and user-friendly experience for crypto enthusiasts.

Although the exact timeline remains uncertain, sources suggest users might see Bitcoin functionality within the next month. Initially, features might be limited and expanded over time.

“We’re excited about MetaMask’s commitment to embracing the multi-chain world of Web3 and continually exploring new integrated features to enhance the usability and security of the leading self-custodial wallet. While we can’t confirm any timeline for specific developments at this time, we’re always working on innovations to serve our users better. Stay tuned for further updates when we’re ready to share more,” a MetaMask spokesperson stated.

Currently, MetaMask does not provide direct support for the Bitcoin blockchain. Users who wish to make Bitcoin-related transactions in MetaMask have to either use Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), an ERC-20 standard token representing Bitcoin on the Ethereum blockchain, or use MetaMask’s feature—Snaps.

In September 2023, BeInCrypto reported that MetaMask announced the launch of Snaps. This feature enables users to integrate applications with non-native blockchains and tokens, including Bitcoin.

While Snaps enables users to manage their BTC within the MetaMask interface, developers must initially set up and understand Bitcoin. Thus, having native Bitcoin support would make the process more straightforward for users.

MetaMask is also favored by non-fungible token (NFT) enthusiasts. Consequently, MetaMask’s integration with Bitcoin is anticipated to facilitate users’ storage of Ordinals.

Ordinals are satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) minted and embedded with unique information, such as text, images, or other digital assets. This essentially mirrors a Bitcoin adaptation of NFTs.

Should MetaMask integration to Bitcoin come to fruition, it could also enhance the Ordinals holders’ experience. Juanse, an active Bitcoin’s Ordinal community member, expressed his enthusiasm about this news.

“I don’t care what you think about MetaMask, they’re the wallet with the most active users in the world. Send Ordinals and Runes higher,” they wrote.
